WebStreptolysin S The potent membrane-active haemolysin streptolysin S (SLS) is secreted by 99% of all group A Streptococcus (GAS) isolates at stationary phase (Yoshino et al., 2010) and is related to the class I bacteriocin family of proteinaceous toxins and antimicrobial peptides (Nizet et al., 2000; Cotter et al., 2005). Streptolysins are two hemolytic exotoxins from Streptococcus. Types include streptolysin O (SLO; slo), which is oxygen-labile, and streptolysin S (SLS; sagA), which is oxygen-stable. SLO is part of the thiol-activated cytolysin family. It is hemolytically active only in a reversibly reduced state. It is antigenic, so its antibody antistreptolysin O can be detected in an antistreptolysin O titre.
