How do x ray telescopes work
X-ray astronomy is an observational branch of astronomy which deals with the study of X-ray observation and detection from astronomical objects. X-radiation is absorbed by the Earth's atmosphere, so instruments to detect X-rays must be taken to high altitude by balloons, sounding rockets, and satellites. X-ray astronomy uses a type of space telescope that can see x-ray radiation which standard optical telescopes, such as the Mauna Kea Observatories, cannot. WebX-ray telescopes are used to study areas such as the distribution of hot gasses between galaxies and supernova remnants which would be otherwise unobservable. Studying X-ray images can also help us to understand the age, composition and expansion rate of the universe. Back to top Gamma Ray Telescopes

WebX-ray telescopes must be very different from optical telescopes. Because of their high-energy, X-ray photons penetrate into a mirror in much the same way that bullets slam into a wall. Likewise, just as bullets ricochet when they hit a wall at a grazing angle, so too will X-rays ricochet off mirrors. http://alevelphysicsnotes.com/astrophysics/non_optical_telescopes.html
