Family neisseriaceae

WebIn 1968, Henriksen and Bøvre proposed the genus Moraxella be classified in the family Neisseriaceae on the basis of phenotypic and morphological similarities. Findings from later studies, however, involving genetic transformation and DNA–rRNA hybridization were not in agreement with this classification. WebNeisseria gonorrhoeae, first described by Neisser in 1879, is a Gram-negative, nonmotile, nonspore-forming diplococcus, belonging to the family Neisseriaceae. It is the etiologic agent of gonorrhea. The other pathogenic species is Neisseria meningitidis, to which N. gonorrhoeaeis genetically closely related.
